When planning a trip to Scottsdale or Sedona, be sure to step off the beaten path to experience some of the truly unique adventures that both cities have to offer. Here's our top 8 list for both cities.
Scottsdale
- Take a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West. Tours change with the season, but be sure to check out the Night Lights on the Desert Tour in summer and fall or the Behind the Scenes tour offered year-round.
- Visit the Desert Botanical Garden and explore the flora and fauna of the Sonoran Desert, all in one place. During the holiday season, don't miss Las Noches de las Luminarias.
- The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art offers free Sunday Sculpture Tours of the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall. Get your picture next to Robert Indiana's Love sculpture.
- The Queen Creek Olive Mill presses Arizona's finest extra virgin olive oil from nine different varieties of olives. It's an actual olive farm and mill, and you can buy their products and shop for a uniquely Arizona gift at the mill's store.
- Every January through April, head over to the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall for Native Trails. This celebration of Native American music, dance, art and traditional foods is a free event.
- Ride the Scottsdale Trolley for a quick tour of the city. Major stops include Scottsdale Fashion Square, the Waterfront Shopping area, and the Downtown Arts and Shopping District.
- The Phoenix Zoo offers year-round fun to children and adults alike. In the summer, the Zoo trucks in tons of snow for youngsters to frolic in, and in the winter when most regions are covered with the real stuff, the Zoo is open for the nighttime Zoolights holiday festival.
- See the Sonoran Desert from a very different perspective – the air. Take a hot air balloon ride and take pictures that your friends and family will marvel at!
Sedona

- Try to find all 50 Javelinas on Parade around the city of Sedona. This art project displays beautifully painted clay javelinas around town, and was designated an Arizona Treasure by the governor.

- Take the free "First Friday Gallery Tour," presented by the Sedona Gallery Association. On the first Friday of each month, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm, members of the Sedona Gallery Association offer a unique monthly showcase highlighting artists, special exhibits and events. These special art receptions give locals and Sedona visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy light refreshments while beginning their weekends with an exploration of Sedona's exciting art scene. For your convenience, the Sedona Trolley provides free transportation to venture from art gallery to art gallery.
- See Sedona from above on a helicopter tour.
